It's Not Funny, MAP Gallery, 28th Jan - 4th Feb

Claire Brentnall & Gaia Rosenberg Colorni

Art: it’s not funny. Well, maybe it’s a bit funny. But can we laugh out loud in the gallery space? Is it OK to have a chuckle when we are encased within the echoing white walls? Yes! Giggle away, for humour in art can be empowering, critical or even just refreshingly silly. Whether it is the intention of the artist to utilize wit as a means of satire, or whether funny art can be just that: playful and hilarious, it seems that the comical in art needs to be taken seriously!

'It’s Not Funny', a week-long show opening at MAP Gallery (Leeds) on January 28th, explores and recognizes the integral position of laughter within the contemporary art canon. This exhibition features a range of works including drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and video works from a unique mix of artists with one thing in common: quite simply, the use of humour in their practice.
